Many, especially those who came by steamboat up the Missouri River, found it difficult to find places to live, while their new homes were being built. Robidoux built a series of 7 connected apartments begun in the 1840's and completed early 1850's. The building was given the name Robidoux Row. Robidoux himself, moved into a unit in 1857 after the death of his wife, Angelique. He lived there until his death May 27, 1868. After several years of neglect, 4 remaining units have been restored. By 1953, the sale barn garnered the 8th largest cattle company in the US, and was a major icon of the thriving, economic impact that St. Joseph had on the world. The building, designed by architect E.J. Eckel in a Neoclassical style and was  once considered the \"crown jewel\" of the vast stockyards and packing houses on the south side of St. Joseph and in 2004, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1960's the industry started to decline and stockyards across the country started to consolidate. St. Joseph was passed over for larger cities and sand after 15 years of no maintenance, the building suffered major damage.
