The Fred Harvey House, at 624 Olive St. Leavenworth was built in 1869. Harvey was a successful restaurant owner and entrepreneur.  In the late 1800's he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, Harvey created lunch counters. and also developed  the world's first line of restaurants and hotels, called Harvey Houses.  Travelers heading out west, could get a nice hot meal and stay in a comfortable hotel, which made traveling more convenient and inviting. Harvey is also, known for establishing the Harvey Girls. They defined hospitality in the wild west in the 1880's. He ran ads in Midwestern and Eastern publications soliciting women 18-30 to travel west and work as waitresses in his restaurants. Their uniforms consisted or a long black dress (no more than 8 inches off the floor}  a starched white apron and black shoes. This Art Print of the Harvey House  is by artist, Diana L Perry.
