The Lotus Club at Lake Contrary, St. Joseph, Mo., was the social center of the Lake's Resort and Community, The resort, was established in the late 1900's, The Lotus Club was only one of many attractions. The Club boasted an opulent, ballroom, which hosted notable bands and entertainers, There was also, fine dining, a billiards room and parlor in the Lotus Club. The Amusement Park was the most popular feature at Lake Contrary and would sometimes draw as many as 1.000 visitors per day. It was comparable to World's of Fun or Six Flags, by today's standards. The Midway, with it's carnival like feel. was known as "The Coney Island of St. Joseph". There was a large, ornate, carousel, with hand carved animals and twinkling bright lights. A huge waterr slide, called the "The Chute" and even a performing elephant, named, Dina . In 1900, Lake Contrary was honored by a visit and speech from the 26th President of the United States, President Franklin Roosevelt. Sadly, in 1962 the Park closed, due to damage by 2 separate fires and inability to repair and draw visitors. Now all that's left are bitter sweet memories. Oh, to go back in time and visit this incredible amusement park and community!
