Patee House Museum, St. Joseph, MO

The Patee House, now known as the Patee House Museum, St. Joseph, Mo was completed in 1858 as a 140-room luxury hotel at 12th and Penn, St. Joseph, Mo. It was was one of the best-known hotels west of the Mississippi and was built by John Patee.  Office space in the building, included the head quarters of the Pony Express and during the Civil War, the Union Army Marshal's office. The army conducted war trials in the ballroom.   After outlaw Jesse James was killed in his nearby home on April 3, 1882, his surviving family stayed at the hotel, during the investigation of his murder.  Oscars Wilde, also stayed at the hotel, withint 2 weeks of Jesse's death. while he was in St. Joseph to give a lecture on April 18,1882. The hotel, was adapted through the years for many uses, including a female college and housed several light industrial factories. Since 1963, the building has been operated as a museum.
