In 1879, William and Eliza Wyeth, hired architect E.J. Eckel to design a 43-room Gothic style mansion at the corner of 11th and Charles Streets. The home sat on a hilltop, with panoramic views of the city and the Missouri River, In 1887. they sold the home to Mrs. Kate Tootle, who was the widow of Milton Tootle, know as "The builder of prosperity in St. Joseph and leader of it's Golden Age". When MIlton Tootle Jr. died in 1946, William Goetz. St. Joseph Museum Board president and the Goetz Brewing Company, donated the money to purchase the building and the museum matched the amount to adapt the privte home into public museum.
