The historic Stockyards Exchange Building in St. Joseph, MO. opened December 1887. It sat on 413 acres and became a booming livestock market , where upwards of 500,000 animals were aucioned off annually in the early 1920's. By 1953, the sale barn garnered the 8th largest cattle company in the US, and was a major icon of the thriving, economic impact that St. Joseph had on the world. The building, designed by architect E.J. Eckel in a Neoclassical style and was  once considered the "crown jewel" of the vast stockyards and packing houses on the south side of St. Joseph and in 2004, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1960's the industry started to decline and stockyards across the country started to consolidate. St. Joseph was passed over for larger cities and sand after 15 years of no maintenance, the building suffered major damage. Several groups tried to raise funds, unsuccessfully and in 2023, the majestic building was demolished.
